- streptolysin O
-
Oxygen-labile thiol-activated haemolysin (native toxin is 61 kD and is cleaved to form 55 kD fragment that retains activity). Haemolysis is inhibited by cholesterol, and only cells with cholesterol in their membranes are susceptible. Toxin aggregates are linked to cholesterol to form a channel 30nm diameter in the membrane, and non-osmotic lysis follows. Markedly inhibits neutrophil movement and stimulates secretion, but has little effect on monocytes.
